Thanks for the support, everyone.

I noticed in my crave diary that the cravings tapered off after 2 days and then again after another 2 days. I'm back to "normal" (around a "1") now in terms of cravings. It still seems kind of crazy, but I do think that some physical reaction must have been involved.

Hey Workin'!!!

My first conference about 3 months after I quit was at a New Jersey casino and I only went into the smokey playing areas a couple of times! It was really a trigger thing being in there and I'm also not much of a gambler! I lost my allotted gambling amount quickly... all 42 cents and got the hell out of there!!!

I've found out that second-hand smoke really bothers my gag reflex now and I just can't tolerate the smell of smoke in a room or be next to anyone smoking! I really don't want all that crap and stench on me, in my lungs or on my body or clothes! I actually tolerate it as well as I did today as I did riding in the car with both of my parents smoking in the front seat... G A C K!!! Funny... couldn't stand it while I was young, but once the change from adolescent to teen hit, that was the thing to do? Doh!!! What a moron!

Yes, enough second hand smoke in an enclosed area can certainly be a problem. Congrats on the 100 dollars but you may want to avoid casinos until smoking in them is prohibited. Hopefully soon!

Ya! I have often wondered if being around second hand smoke could cause a physical response to start cravings up again! I don't know the scientific data on it, but the same thing happened to me at a garage party once. Everyone was playing darts, drinking beer and smoking in the garage since their house was designated as a smoke free zone for the kids . . . I had enough beer going on that I was nearly inhaling the second hand smoke on purpose by the end of the night - but I did NOT actually have a PUFF! Nevertheless, it definitely brought back my cravings to a higher level and they lasted about two weeks! So I had to be on guard when I clued in that I was vulnerable to this and had to stay away from second hand smoke for awhile.

You did very good to realize the trigger and change your clothes right away! Your resolve is very good and I think you handled it great! Maybe some others have some input too ?

Yesterday I went into a casino, one of the last places where indoor smoking is allowed. I've avoided the casino since I quit, since I figured it would either make me sick or activate some cravings. At this point, I figured I'd be OK with it. As it turns out, I won $100, and had some cravings activated. Since I went there, I'd say cravings are at about a 3-4 on the 1 through 10 scale. They are quick but can be pretty intense.

So I have some questions:

1) Is it possible for me to have ingested enough secondhand smoke to have brought a noticeable amount of nicotine into my system? Or is this just mental? (I noticed after I got home that the smell in my clothes was kind of setting me off; changing out of them was helpful, but not enough.)

2) How do the rest of you cope with a sudden surge in cravings?

BTW, I don't intend to give in to these sensations. In fact, the cravings are a reminder as to why I should not smoke again. If I were to light up, the cravings that followed would be even more intense, and I don't want to deal with that. Just dealing with this now makes me amazed that I was able to tolerate withdrawal. Ugh! What a b---- that was!
