Don't be discouraged, bugger. I DO have COPD, although I smoked much longer and heavier than you. I am still able to work and am not on O2 (yet). As I have come to understand this disease, some people are genetically predisposed. History of asthma, smoking, etc.. contributes greatly. Once you quit, instead of a steady decline you kind of level out...and that's good news! You have over 66 days and are well on your way to a 'new and improved' you! Keep up the terrific work!

buggerdb, when at was at the hospital recently, I was first told that I had COPD until the chest x-ray came back, and then I was told I had walking pneumonia. I'm now back to getting 98% oxygen. But when I was told that I had COPD I was really concerned and asked the doctor if this meant I was now going to go downhill. I was told no. Since I had quit smoking, it was still possible for the cilia to do some repair. I was told that the danger is in continuing to smoke. There is a good chance that if you have COPD it will not get much worse than it is or it may worsen so slowy that you'd die of a nonsmoking related illness. Just ask the right questions and don't throw in the towel.

Hey mate !

Wish I had a dollar for the number of times I have self diagnosed myself with all sorts of thimgs only to find out that it was nothing!!

Also stopping smoking makes ypou more panicky for quite a while!!

Buggerdb,

I agree with what everyone else had posted. If was serious they probably would have rushed the appt. Try not to worry too much and feel glad you are being proactive when it comes to your health.

Also, you may not technically be paying for services but you are in your tax dollars so you have the same rights as a paying customer. I would do what cvdeb suggested and ask for an earlier appt. Most doctors want to prevent unnecessary stress.

Hey bug,

I would try and not read too much into it, it will only serve to stress you out and possibly make your quit tougher at times in the next few weeks. I had a breathing test at work a few years back to see if I could do a specific job or not, and they said I had the lungs of a 78 year old, obviously I didn't get to do that job, but strangely enough they never asked me to follow up with anyone else either because they knew I was a smoker back then. Just relax, and enjoy your successful quit, I'll be waiting for you on the cruise ship.

Where I am at now, I don't pay for medical services, because it is covered under the provincial health plan. It is quite nice in a way (lower insurance costs, less hastle with cash), but doesn't give me a right to complain about an appt time. I tried pushing and asked for an earlier time, and I couldn't get one. I agree with you both, if something was very wrong, I would be called in right away. It is just unsettling. Anyhow, thanks for the kind thoughts, and I will be around 2 months quit when I see the doctor, so I will have that in my corner!
