Hey Smlfree, congratulations on your 3 days smoke free! That is a stupendous accomplishment! The weight -- well, nicotine also pushes food through the gut faster so food now stays in our system the length of time it's SUPPOSED to stay there, extracting all the nutrients and goodies while passing through. Also, quitting increases the craving for sweets and something to replace the hand to mouth action we were accustomed to, early on in the quit, anyway. Most people find lots of water helps, the bottle to the mouth is an excellent hand to mouth activity; it helps hydrate you and it also gives you a full feeling so that you don't eat as much (theoretically). Having said all that, I tend not to curb what I am eating right now, because I really need the rewards and food is one of the most rewarding things I can think of. And, since it's not so rewarding to eat a stick of celery, I tend to go to the starchy or sweet stuff. But I know people who have lost the weight later, and some who have not gained at all. It's all an individual thing. And doctors will say you would have to gain more than 100 lbs to be as bad for you as smoking, so we really have no complaint when we are doing something this wonderful for ourselves, wouldn't you agree? Hi smlfree, There are some really great sugar free candies out there that can help curb your sweet tooth. You can also eat fresh fruit, or smaller portions of dried fruit. Don't forget to stay active, go for walks, take the stairs, all those little things add up! You're doing great! Sylvie, Bilingual Health Educator

Hi smlfre, I have heard that smoking nicotine burned 200 calories, which means now there's an extra 200 calories we need to burn. So that may account for our weight gain. Eating helps us occupy our mouths, but it's WHAT we eat that matters. There are lots of things that don't add calories: carrots, celery, water, ice. Let me let you in on a little secret: I was always a size 6. Now I'm a size 8. But I'm still me.
