This is a great post, Tom! You have captured the dilemma and the lies we told ourself so well. I am glad I don't have to worry about quitting anymore - one less thing to get stressed out about. If you don't stand for something you'll fall for anything. Where do you stand on smoking? 1) I'd like to quit. It's just not convenient for me right now. I already have enough stress in my life without going out and looking for more. It brings me pleasure and relaxation and I don't want to give that up right now. 2) I want to quit. So many people have done it and they are making it so hard to continue smoking. I wish they'd come up with a way to get me there without any hassle. And if I do quit won't that be endorsing all this tax and rules nonsense? Wouldn't that be giving into people that want to run my life? 3) I need to quit. It's become so expensive to keep doing this. I used to be so healthy and hardly ever caught even a common cold now I'm running to the doctor every couple of months and it's getting expensive. They've raised taxes on them again, I'm already smoking the cheap stuff. I got passed over for promotion at work. I was evenly matched with the person they promoted. The only difference between us was they didn't smoke and it was a full time position with better benefits that I really could use right about now. 4) I've got to quit. The doctor told me I have COPD and it will likely develop into emphysema and disable me. Quitting now may stop this from getting worse but there's already a lot of damage I will have to live with. Maybe it's just not worth it. The quality of my life from here on only MAY improve if I quit, it MAY not. What if I go through all the pain of quitting and it only gets worse? 5) It just doesn't matter anymore, it's already too late! Of course, we all know the smartest option is option zero, don't start. That's such a no brainer, anyone could see that. If you've chosen another option then where are you? How long can you stand for it? And if you beat the odds and live without the diseases it causes, then what have you discovered about what you stood for? What did you prove and to whom? If you've quit then stay quit, option zero.
