Hi Trish..yes those are exactly my symptoms. I cannot stand a red light, especially if I'm in the left lane. Everyone tells me it is in my head but the physical symtoms are so real I feel like jumping out of the car. Wonder why this happens after years of being "normal"?Have you read anything or found anything that helps? The zoloft isn't working this time and I can't continue to take a cab to work..it's too expensive and I feel embarassed when the cab is in front of my house and the car is in the driveway!! Jan

Oh boy, how can I relate. I drive for a living and have for 20 years. Two weeks ago for no reason I had the most horrible panic attack in a decade while driving down a road I go down all the time. When I passed the same spot on the way back, it happened again. These last two weeks have been hellish. I have made myself drive past the 'spot' about 10 times and it didn't happen again, but that's not my problem now. Now the whole time I'm in my car, which can be 8 to 14 hours a day, I'm having to convince myself I won't freak out. I'm not afraid of a wreck, that never crosses my mind. Can't even tell you what the terror is about, it's just there! The anxiety level is so high and so constant and unrelenting, it becomes unbearable. Even the Ativan doesn't get rid of it. Two weeks ago I loved the freedom of driving and now it's my nightmare. Now I don't feel safe anywhere, cause my attacks are now happening in the places I always felt secure. I hate this, I gotta drive.

Hi Jan, That is by far my worst part I too am trying to overcome. I experienced panic attacks while driving, so its the hardest to overcome. But I am curious, do you have what I also experienced? Panic attacks at stoplights? Im ok if the light is green and keep moving with the flow of traffic, but if I get caught at a stoplight, the waiting for three other lanes, one at a time to finally go, spirals me into a panic. I would even go to extremes of if the light up ahead was red, I would drive very slowly, just hoping it would turn green by the time I got there. But unfortunately this doesnt always work. Trish

After many years of traveling, flying into airports, renting cars, and making a goodliving making sales calls driving around strange cities.. I developed a driving phobia. I hid it for years..just depended on other people..etc. I was put on zoloft by a very smart doctor, and have been driving for the last year and a half. I just got a new, wonderful job, less than 5 miles from my home..and 2 out of 3 days a week..I experience "near death" at an intersection..what's up? Jan
