Hello All:

I am new here to this group.  One of my biggest fears has always been flying.  It really has nothing to do with the safety of the plane, but rather with my own ability to cope while onboard.  The part that makes this a difficult fear to overcome is that exposure is costly and difficult.  For many types of exposure, it is possible to stay until your fear rises above a certain level and then temporarily retreat if need be.  Flying is different, however, because once the door is closed your committed to seeing the flight through.  I still fly, but I want to reach a point where I can do so comfortably with out the sleepless nights in anticipation.  My biggest fears are that I will act out uncontrollably if I were to panic or that I would not be able to cope or not have the help I needed if a panic episode occurred.  I think that if I could believe that no matter what happened, even if I panicked, I would still have some level of composure and wouldn't make a scene then I could probably move past this fear.  Right now, every time I get off the plane I feel lucky for not having panicked.  Can someone offer any insight here? Even in situations where you exposed to prolong heightened fear are people still able to cope?
