Hi everyone, Just a quick note, I have gotten in touch with Melanie to clarify her response to Nurseboy and perhaps make it clearer for all to understand. She will be in touch shortly. Thank you Josie

In the meantime everyone who is scared they are going crazy but are reassured by research that that is not the case have now gone into major panic attacks because it has now been confirmed that you can go crazy.

Melanie, I disagree! All the research shows that you people with panic disorder DO NOT go crazy. That seems to be what you are saying in your message however the latter part of your message contradicts this when you say "In short, research to date suggests that panic disorder can drive people "crazy."" I assume it is a typo and should read CANNOT but maybe you can clarify it. Thanks, Danielle

Hi Melanie I find your answer very contradictory....the bulk of it is saying that it is a myth that you can go crazy. Then later on in the message you say that in fact panic disorder can drive people crazy. Was this a typing error or perhaps you could define crazy for me.

Nurseboy, I collaborated with a doctor on staff and he suggested the following: One of the biggest myths about panic disorder is that people believe that it means that they are "going crazy." This is simply not true. Panic attacks do often go with other kinds of serious problems such as depression and OCD but if you have another serious problem, you probably know about it. For example, people with schizophrenia may also suffer from anxiety but the symptoms of schizophrenia are quite distinct from the symptoms of panic disorder and there is no evidence that panic disorder can "cause" schizophrenia. In short, having panic disorder is not good and early development of panic disorder may go with other serious problems further down the road. However, the risk seems fairly non-specific. Early anxiety seems to be a predictor of other problems in general and not especially predictive of schizophrenia. In short, research to date suggests that panic disorder "does not" drive people "crazy". Hope this was the answer you were looking for? Nurseboy, Are you asking me if a pediatric patient can "go crazy" because of general anxiety? I am a little confused on what the questions is? Sorry :). Melanie

hi! as a registered nurse, i do tons of reesearch and meet many adolescents (peds RN) with anxiety. Is there any proof that you know of that general anxiety oand panic can lead to other things besides depression over the anxiety? I mean, any research that proves a person can actually go "crazy" from it and lose himself , his mind and sense of self forever?
